FOTCO is located in an area where abundant flora and fauna exists. It has a dense growth of mangroves and a large variety of commercial and coastal fish and shrimp species. It is also an important destination for migratory birds during the winter. Mangroves are critical to the ecosystem of this area and provide breeding ground for marine life. FOTCO is extremely conscious of the importance of ecosystems preservation. Since commencement of operations, it has maintained a zero spill record. An oil spill control boom is in position at all times. Strict measures are taken to ensure that no solid or fluid waste is disposed off into the sea. FOTCO continues to take special care to avoid disturbing mangroves growth pattern. Its efforts to protect the mangroves has resulted in accelerated rate of re-colonisation in the area. FOTCO aims to become one of the most environmental friendly petroleum handling facility in the region under the guidance of international organizations like IUCN and WWF. FOTCO regularly undertakes mangrove rehabilitation projects in coordination with IUCN and plans to continue close cooperation with such organizations for addressing the long term environment management issue of Port Qasim so that the area remains undisturbed in the years to come.
